The health of air crew and air traffic controllers is an important component of aviation safety.

It is therefore a requirement of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) that pilots and air traffic controllers meet certain medical standards and hold a current medical certificate.

Aviation Medicals are performed by accredited Designated Aviation Medical Examiners. To clarify, these are doctors who possess a post-graduate qualification in Aviation Medicine and participate in ongoing education in the field of aviation medicine.

If you wear corrective lenses, please ensure you bring two pairs to your aviation medical examination appointment.

  • Blood tests arranged and can be done with any pathology including the onsite one. Please be aware that almost all the aviation medical blood tests should be done fasting (means no food or drink rather than plane water for about 10 hours over night.
  • Hearing test which is performed on site by our registered nurse.
  • Aviation ophthalmology examination which for the first-time aviation medical should be performed by credentialed CASA optometrist. (Optometrists and Aviation Ophthalmologists set their own fees).You can find their name in CASA website.

Frequently asked questions

What is CASA schedule for age-related test for medical exam?

The CASA age-related tests for Class 1 & 3 licenses are:

  • Blood tests (serum lipids & blood sugar), Audio & ECG.
  • Eye Examination by a designated examiner (usually a designated aviation optometrist or DAO) is required on the initial Class 1 & 3 and then regularly after the age of 60.

You can check aged related required tests in CASA website. Note that the tests are based on your age on the day of the medical.

– Class 2 Medicals do not routinely require any age-related tests.

– Basic class 2 is paper based medical exam. A Basic Class 2 medical certificate is an alternative to a full Class 2 certificate for a:

Basic Class 2 certificates are cheaper and the application process is easier compared to Class 2 certificates.

The medical standards have less flexibility. The Basic Class 2 process does not allow for the management of medical conditions a DAME or CASA can consider when issuing a normal Class 2 certificate. This is because the doctors assessing a Basic Class 2 do not have specialist aviation medicine training.

Which test do you do on site?

All the Standard tests (if needed) may be provided on site:

  • ECG
  • Audiology screening (hearing test)
  • Blood Tests (in the same building),almost always needs fasting for about 9 hours before the test .
  • Urine test

How soon before the medical certificate expiry should I get the medical?

It is highly suggested to do your medical 2-4 weeks before expiry.

When do I need a DAME clearance for duty?

Class 1 license: if impaired for 7 days

Class 2 (private pilot) & Class 3 license: if impaired for 30 days

What should I do before I attend for my aviation medical exam appointment?

  1. Please go to MyCASA website and fill out the applicant part completely and submit it.This section MUST be completed prior to your arrival at the clinic. Please make sure you have ticked all boxes and it says applicant part is completed. Please do not leave questions as unsure as much as possible.
  2. On the day of your appointment, you will have an appointment with the Nurse first then you will be seen by Dr. Faham.
  3. Please arrive on time.
  4. Your medical exam takes about 45 minutes
